Q: How may I be released from probation/supervised release early?

Answer

You are eligible to request early termination from probation or supervised release under the following circumstances:

After you have completed at least one year of supervision, you may request your attorney to petition the Court, or you may request early termination through your U.S. Probation Officer.
If you have been convicted of a serious felony and/or have a history of violence, your case will normally not be considered for early termination.

Q: May I have a copy of my presentence report?

Answer

The U.S. Probation Office is not authorized to release copies of your presentence report.

Q: Where may I travel?

Answer

The Northern District of Indiana is comprised of 32 counties. You are allowed to travel freely within these counties. Unless you are given permission in advance by the judge in your case, any requests to travel outside of these 32 counties must be approved in advance by your U.S. Probation Officer.

Failure to obtain advance approval may result in a violation of your supervision.
Only the court may approve travel outside of the contiguous United States.

Q: How do I transfer my probation/supervised release?

Answer

Any requests to transfer your supervision must be made to your federal probation officer. Each district has specific requirements that must be met before supervision may be transferred. General requirements are employment, housing and compliance with the conditions of supervision imposed by the Court.

Q: Are you able to help me get a job?

Answer

Your federal probation officer has resources and contact information that will assist in helping you secure employment, or preparing for employment. Referral to state and local workforce agencies, job readiness programs and specific job referrals are some of the options your officer will make available to you.

Q: May I have my conviction expunged? How do I get a Presidential Pardon?

Answer

Federal convictions cannot be expunged. However, you may apply for a Presidential Pardon. Any person convicted of a felony in Federal court is eligible to file a petition for a Presidential Pardon under the following circumstances, although some exceptions may apply:

The individual is no longer serving the sentence and is not under parole, probation, or supervised release;
Five years have passed since release from confinement or if confinement was not imposed, five years from the date of conviction; and
A waiting period of seven years is required for more serious offenses, including violations of narcotic laws, income tax laws, perjury, violation of public trust involving dishonesty, violent crimes, gun control laws, fraud involving substantial sums of money, violations involving organized crime, and other crimes of a serious nature.

Q: I am locked out of the Electronic Reporting System, how do I reset my password

Answer

If you are unable to access the Electronic Report System, please contact your federal probation officer immediately. He or she will provide instructions as to how to access and is able to reset your individual password, if necessary.

Q: Do you know of any housing for sex offenders?

Answer

We recognize the difficulties in securing adequate housing and your federal probation officer will work closely with you to ensure you find a place to reside that meets state and federal requirements. Please contact your officer immediately if there are any issues with your housing situation.
