The United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office for the Northern District of Indiana covers 32 counties in the northern half of the State of Indiana. The district has five divisions: Fort Wayne, Hammond, Lafayette, Michigan City and South Bend.

The United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office serves six federal judges and four magistrates, handling hundreds of new criminal cases per year. There are approximately 900 offenders under supervision and 250 criminal defendants under supervision. Each year, approximately 280 presentence investigations are completed.

Other agencies with which the office interacts include the U.S. Attorney's Office, the U.S. Marshal Service, and a number of federal investigative agencies.

The United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office serves as a component of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government. Its employees are not part of the civil service but are eligible for civil service health, life and retirement benefits.
