Internship Duties

EXTENT AND NATURE OF INTERNSHIP DUTIES:

Interns will undergo orientation at the Probation Office, which will be conducted by the Internship Coordinator, the HR Specialist, and a Supervising United States Probation Officer.

Duties Interns Will Perform:

  • Assist probation officers in the performance of his or her duties under the direction and supervision of the Probation Officer and the Supervisor.
  • Follow the professional policies and procedures governed by this profession.
  • Assume responsibility for his/her actions and activities.
  • Refrain from personal relationships with a individual under supervision.
  • Remain courteous, open-minded and enthusiastic.
  • Ask questions when unsure of something.
  • Report on time for work at the Courthouse.
  • Conduct criminal history inquiries with local police departments.
  • Verify vital statistics (birth, marriage, employment, etc.).
  • Assist with collateral investigations (obtaining data verification between jurisdictions) or otherwise assist in verifying data.
  • Carry a Probation Office Identification Card with him/her at all times while performing duties as an intern.
  • Maintain a daily log of activities to be reviewed weekly by the Internship Coordinator.
  • Complete an evaluation regarding the internship experience.
  • Contact state and other federal agencies at the direction of the Probation Officer.
  • Complete online training on the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees.
  • Attend in-house trainings.
  • Witness court activities related to the sentencing process.
  • Attend court to observe a hearing.
  • Assist with researching and developing community resources; proofread and edit reports.

Interns Will Not:

  • Carry or possess a firearm or Cap-Stun devices while performing duties as an intern of the Probation Office.
  • Drive government vehicles.
  • Carry badges.
  • Sign any document relating to any function of the Probation Office without an approving signature of a Probation Officer.
  • Be responsible for the completion of a presentence report.
  • Supervise a caseload.
  • Release confidential information.
  • Assist in interviewing, counseling or advising a individual under supervision or family.
  • Perform the essential duties of a Probation Officer or Officer Assistant.
  • Assist in presentence investigations.
  • Draft presentence reports or make sentencing recommendations to the court.
